Why Professional Dog Training Matters
Training is one of the best investments you can make in your dog's overall well-being.
Dogs thrive when they understand what's expected of them. Consistent training builds confidence, strengthens your relationship, and provides valuable mental stimulation that helps reduce boredom and unwanted behaviors. Whether your goal is a calmer walk through the neighborhood or a dog that confidently greets guests at the front door, our dog obedience training programs are designed around real-life situations.
Training can help your dog:
- Learn reliable manners at home
- Improve focus around distractions
- Walk politely on a leash
- Come when called
- Build confidence in new environments
- Strengthen communication with your family
- Develop healthy routines
- Enjoy lifelong learning
Because training isn't just about commands—it's about creating a happier life together.
Our Positive Reinforcement Philosophy
Every interaction teaches your dog something. That's why we believe learning should always be rewarding.
Our trainers use positive reinforcement training methods backed by behavioral science. Instead of punishment or fear, we reward behaviors we'd like to see repeated.
Depending on your dog's personality and motivation, rewards may include:
- High-value treats
- Praise
- Toys
- Playtime
- Access to favorite activities
Positive reinforcement creates dogs who enjoy learning, retain skills longer, and develop confidence throughout the training process. Our goal is simple: teach your dog what to do, rather than focusing on what not to do.
Every family has different needs, which is why we offer flexible dog training options that fit into your routine. Whether you're visiting for daycare, boarding, or simply looking to build better habits, we have a program that works for your schedule.

Our trainers work with you to identify the skills that matter most for your lifestyle.
Meet Our Expert Trainer
At The Dog Stop, training isn't handled by just anyone with a leash and good intentions — it's led by professionals who take preparation, mentorship, and ongoing learning seriously.
Brett
Our training program is overseen by Brett Reynolds, Director of Dog Training. Brett is a certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA) and Fear Free Animal Trainer with more than 20 years of experience, and he personally oversees the training curriculum and mentors trainers at every TDS location.
Before a TDS trainer ever works with your dog, they've earned it. Every trainer must pass both written and practical exams, then attend a week-long training academy at our corporate headquarters — hands-on instruction that goes well beyond a certificate on a wall. Once they're working in-store, their education doesn't stop: every TDS trainer participates in continuing education through professional development conferences each year and works toward global certification.
It's this combination of structured preparation, ongoing mentorship, and a real commitment to continuing education that means your dog is always in capable, caring hands.
Training Tips from Our Experts
Great training doesn't require hours of your day — it just requires the right approach. Here are a few tips our trainers share with pet parents:
- Keep sessions short. Five to ten focused minutes beats a long, unfocused session every time. Short sessions keep your dog engaged and set them up to succeed.
- Reward consistency, not perfection. Reward the behavior you want every time you see it, even a partial effort. Consistent reinforcement is what builds a reliable habit.
- Practice in different environments. A "sit" your dog knows in the living room isn't the same as a "sit" they know at the park. Practicing in new places helps the behavior stick no matter where you are.
- End on a win. Wrap up each session with a command your dog already knows well, so training always ends on a successful, confident note.
- Be patient with setbacks. An off day doesn't mean your dog forgot what they learned. Take a step back, keep it low-pressure, and pick back up tomorrow.
The Dog Stop
Why Dogs Need Mental Enrichment
Physical exercise gets a lot of attention, but a tired body isn't the same as a satisfied mind. Dogs need mental exercise too — and learning new skills is one of the best ways to provide it.
Training sessions ask your dog to focus, problem-solve, and engage with you, which uses mental energy in a way that a walk around the block simply doesn't. That kind of mental engagement can help ease boredom, reduce stress, and support better behavior overall — many "problem behaviors" are really just a dog looking for an outlet.
At The Dog Stop, we see training as part of a bigger picture of wellness, alongside the physical activity and socialization your dog already gets with us. A dog who's engaged mentally, active physically, and socially fulfilled isn't just better behaved — they're a genuinely happier dog.
